GripShift Unveiled
The PSP racer makes its way to Sony's next-gen console.

December 15, 2006
- Sony's PlayStation Network is up and running at full steam, and with it more and more games and demos are becoming available for download. PlayStation 3 owners have already been able to snag the likes of Blast Factor, Lemmings, Go! Sudoku and more from the PlayStation Store to quench their gaming hunger in-between the major in-store releases, and plenty more titles on their way.

Right around the turn of the year, either late this month or early January, Sony Online Entertainment will bring its high octane racer GripShift to the system via the PlayStation Store for $9.99. For those who aren't familiar with the original PSP release, the racer mixes stunt driving with puzzle elements and even some platforming while you race around over undulating suspended tracks. Tracks feature multiple routes, shortcuts, loops, jumps, ramps and such aimed to keep you on your toes.

While the game first appeared on Sony's handheld, GripShift for the PS3 will be more than a simple port. For starters, the game has been optimized to run in full 720p resolution at 60fps, fast enough for even the most ardent speed fans. The vehicle handling is said to be improved with more responsive controls, a welcome enhancement to be certain. The PS3 version will also feature more than 125 new and re-mixed levels spanning over 25 race tracks. And for you competitive types, four player online gaming will be present as well.

Though the game is right around the corner, that's all the information we have for now. Be sure to click on either screenshot here to see the rest.

I dl'd the demo and it was kooky fun.  So I bought it yesterday, my son (7) is playing it now and loving it.  It is crazy and physics defying, but kind of fun.  I think it will get old quick, but not bad for ten clams.

I played this a little last night and it was pretty entertaining.  Considering new games cost $60, at $10 I would definitely rate it worth buying.  It is completely unrealistic but fun.  Like you jump off the side of tracks onto other sections ... and you can steer, speed up, and slow down while in the air.  I think it is pretty innovative how you have to figure out shortcuts off the track in order to meet the goals.

Hopefully the demo has a few more options than NBA07 that I just downloaded.

playing this game here and there and this is where i am at, intermediate level 58"ramp up", i like this game because there are three challenges for every level and some of these levels really require some thought and some planning. if anyone else is playing this, did you have trouble with that stupid board with the elephants? it took me about 50 restarts to get th GS token.

I finally played my first online race and I got to say that was a blast.  I was cracking up the whole time stupid TNT. Also I saw something that was kind of cool, there is an option to invite others on your friends list to join a race.  If anyone who has it is ever looking to race a few and sees me online send me an invite.  I am not very good but it is still fun.
