Stage6 was the crème de la crème of high definition streaming, a god sent website among World of Warcraft machinima fans. Regretfully Stage6 had to close it's doors due to the expenses it accumulated, which has been allegedly reported to have been over a million dollars a month.   Now salvation has arrived in form of VReel.net - a new website which will follow the same concept Stage6 was built upon; Free High Definition streaming. Hopefully the new creators won't run into the same financial problems as Stage6 did.   So far the website doesn't disclose much, except that the launch date has been pushed back to May 6th. Thought the creators promise to have something "big" for April 29th.

Heres the basic info:

Q: Will [Vreel] have the video database that Stage6 used to have?

A: No, Vreel is simply using the DivX codec & webplayer in order to provide the public with a free, High Definition video-streaming website. We have no official Affiliation with the DivX corperation, or the Stage6 platform. Our Video database will be built from the ground up from day one onwards. And once again, we'd like to express our thanks to DivX for allowing us to use their codec and webplayer for this platform.
--
Q: What will be the Max filesize limit on uploaded videos?

A: At launch, the filesize limit will be set to 800mb, in order to test the waters. This may be raised (or lowered!) over the upcoming months. Ideally, we'd like to see the limit reach 1GB before our third month.
--
Q: Will [Vreel] require a paid registration?
A: No, we do not intend on charging for any of our services. No registration will be required for viewing videos, although a free account will be required to upload, comment, and share movies.
--
Q: Where are the servers based?

A: All of our servers are currently based in America. However, videos have been stress tested from most locations in europe, with users on a 2meg line being able to watch video content without any significant wait, or buffer time. Plans are currently in place to set up European servers over the upcoming launch months.
--
Q: Will you offer a download service?

A: A download system is in place, but this will not be active on day 1. Our first few days will be all about testing server strenght and bandwidth consumption. Video Downloads will be made available as soon as possible.

All i can Say is THANK GOD. I missed the stage 6 style sicne it went offline!

Did Stage 6 even allow you to upload in HD?  I don't remember that, but, I don't record in HD.  I never noticed any widescreen vids there. I know vimeo does and that's what I am currently using  http://www.vimeo.com The only downside IMO is you can only upload 500mb's a week there but the quality is excellent.  Far superior, IMO, to the site Sage 6 recommended after it's shut down (veoh.com).

Hopefully this site works great because Stage 6 was the best for SD videos that I've ever seen.  Thanks for posting it BB.

Well, this site is almost ready. It was supposed to launch in April/May but the company they hired didn't know what they were doing.     They have since launched the site and it is in its beta stage.  You can sign up and submit videos but it can be a pain staking process at this point.  I think it is working a little better now, when I originally tried it took me 2 days to get a video to upload.

It finally appeared today and I'm not that thrilled with the quality.  It is not that close IMO to vimeo.com , but, it does have a bigger viewing screen which I like.  The loss of quality could have something to do with the file format or the screen resolution I used, so, I'm not going to give up on them yet.  I have seen some good quality vids on there.  Overall, the site is running really slow and I'm not sold that these guys know exactly what they are doing. But, I will give them another try if/when I make another video.

For now, I still think vimeo.com is the best site available.
