I got a call from gamestop today telling me that they have announced a 'special edition' GTA.5 for $89.99. It will come with a tome of extra stuff - I dont remember what the message said, but it was a lot.  If anyone is interested in that kind of stuff then you may want to head down to your local gamestore and reserve it.

I got the same call. The extra stuff sounded like a bunch of stuff I don't have much interest in. One of them was a soundtrack CD. I believe these calls went out to everyone that has a pre-order in for GTA IV. I can't wait for this game.

Grand Theft Auto IV PS3 "On The Horizon?"

Well, this will cause a major stir.
It's very possible that this could just be another website typo, but a little notice that goes along with it is most curious. As we all know, Take-Two Interactive was forced to delay Grand Theft Auto IV until next year; the initial release date had been October 16 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. At the time, a Take-Two representative looked at the early build for the game and concluded it simply wouldn't hit the target release date.

However, whispers have been growing around the Internet, and it's all due to the official UK PlayStation site. For whatever reason, they list the PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV with an October 2007 release date. And we've seen this misprint before, but there are two things going against that logic right now: firstly, it's way too late to be using such an old release date for such a high-profile title. Secondly, if you look down towards the middle of the News updates on the site's home page, it says GTAIV is "now on the horizon."
What the heck is going on here? For PS3 owners, this rumor gets even more interesting due to the recent rumors of a major announcement coming this month. G4TV said they have a "huge announcement" ready to go (they just have to resolve some legal issues first), and that 40GB PS3 is looking more and more possible with every passing day. Wouldn't it make a ton of sense to release a timed-exclusive and gigantic title like GTAIV along with a lower-spec yet cheaper PlayStation 3 model? Oh, we think it does make sense. It may not prove true, but hey, it's always fun to ponder and speculate, isn't it?

16-Player Multiplayer in Grand Theft Auto IV?

Rumor has it that Grand Theft Auto IV – which was originally set for release yesterday, if you remember correctly – will be sporting some online multiplayer, with support for up to 16 players. This comes way of a PlayStation Holiday Preview Event which was recently held in Toronto. An individual from GamingExcellence was in attendance, and while GTA IV wasn’t being shown off, a Rockstar representative was feeling rather chatty.
In addition to playing around with the idea of a game world that’s completely open from the start (unheard of in a GTA game), Rockstar is aiming to have a multiplayer component for at least 16 players simultaneously – and the mode won’t simply be comprised of a standard deathmatch.
This is exciting news, and while Rockstar is refusing to comment on the rumor, we’ve certainly got our fingers crossed that it turns out to be true.

New Features for GTA IV explained!

quote:

* The May 2007 issue of Game Informer reveals that after the initial load sequence, no such occurrences persist when entering/exiting buildings or crossing islands. The extent of the loadtime-free expectation in the game has also been commented on, when a Rockstar spokesperson claimed: "You can basically play the game from beginning to end without a single load screen."[7]

  * The player will not be able to fly aeroplanes[17], unlike some previous instalments of the Grand Theft Auto series. Helicopters, however, will be flyable onto any building rooftop. There is also a confirmed airport.[16]

  * Details are also revealed that demonstrate how variations in the terrain cause the way the character walks to change. The way the player moves is controlled by a physics engine instead of purely pre-written animations, therefore enabling character movements to be more realistic. Rockstar Games announced that Euphoria by NaturalMotion would be used in future Rockstar titles in a press release that accompanied the second trailer, confirming that Euphoria would indeed be used in the game.

  * The player will also be able to perform a variety of new actions such as climbing telephone poles, fire escapes and pushing people who bump into him, and calling a woman for a date. When selecting the mobile phone, a zoomed-in version of the mobile screen pops up in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and a list of several commands are made available to the player, such as "meet me here," etc.

  * Bellic’s outfit can be changed throughout the game; however, it will not be possible to customize his physique or hairstyle as in San Andreas.[7]

  * Stealing a parked car can no longer be done simply by opening the door and driving off. Now it involves Niko approaching the car unnoticed, breaking the glass with his elbow, before hot-wiring it - only then can he use it. Also, there will be several animation variations to sneaking up to a car and breaking it. The way Niko enters the car would look different each time depending where and how he is in relation to the car. Because of the NaturalMotion system used in the game, the way the character will approach the car will be completely random. The trunks of cars will also be utilised by the player, though specific details are unknown. Furthermore, players will be able to choose from four different camera views whilst in a car according to their needs. The player will also be able to control vehicles such as boats and helicopters.

  * The Police AI and star wanted levels now operate differently. When the police are in search of Niko, the player will now have to avoid a certain radius marked on the map in which the police will be looking for him. The size of this radius will increase with the player's wanted level (the more stars, the bigger the radius) and also re-centres itself on Niko's location if he is spotted by the police. Instead of utilising the 'Pay'N'Spray' as in previous games, Niko can now more realistically disguise himself by clandestinely changing vehicles in empty areas such as parking garages, a feature seen in the video game Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. Additionally, pedestrians can now report crimes such as car-jacking.

  * When Niko pulls out a weapon, the camera positions itself above his shoulder, and a view-finder appears at the centre of the screen. It's possible to lock a target and move laterally to avoid incoming shots. Hand to hand combat is also being reworked, and will feel "much more natural" than before [citation needed].

  * The gunfight system has been reworked to feel natural by utilising a Gears of War-style cover system, reason being that the combat system in previous games were awkward and cumbersome.

  * Niko will be able to travel around the city in buses, taxis and trains. Bus timings can be viewable at bus stops although nothing else has been confirmed. While in a taxi Niko can pay the driver more to go faster, or he can just listen to the radio and watch the city go past.[citation needed]

  * It has been revealed that every street in the game will have a name for the reason that some missions will require the player to go to a specific address.

  * In addition to the mobile phone, Rockstar has revealed that the player will also make use of the Internet as a means of communication. Although the exact details of the role of the Internet in the game are being kept under wraps, it has been revealed in a GamesTM Magazine article that Niko can access the web from various cybercafes (one of which is called "TW@") in order to upload his resume for prospective employers

This is rumor IMO but was published in Playstation World Magazine.

quote:

According to Playstation World Magazine, Rockstar will in a way aid Sony in launching Accomplishments for the system, Themed spaces for Home and provide exclusive content for the PS3 (although not as large scale as the 360's exclusive content) after the release of the 360's episodes.

From a USA today report yesterday:

Steal a Glimpse inside GTA IV

Story:
You are Niko who leaves his rough European town to pursue the American deram.
His American cousin promises that the streets are lined with gold, but Niko discovers he was lured here to work for His cousins small cab stand and help him get out of debt with loan sharks.
To survive Niko makes money, connections and a name in the criminal underworld.
As you'll discover,Niko had his own reasons for leaving his homeland.

Location and Look
Players return to Liberty City, Modeled after New York City(Manhattan is called Algonquin,Times Square is Star Junction,Central Park is Middle Park)
While the game world is smaller than San Andreas, it is fleshed out with incredible detail, realistic graphics, motion capture videos, more verticality(such as access to skyscrapper roof tops) and a 24 hour day-night cycle(2 minutes of game time equals onw hour.

Game Play:
As with past GTA games,IV can best be descibed as a non-linear "sandbox" world, populated by pedestrians and cars that obey traffic lights, in which you can do anything and go anywhere.
Players will take on dozens of missions over the course of the game assigned by the characters you'll meet.
One challenging mission is to get the address of an informant, and you must carjack a cop car to gain access to the police computer. How you accomplish this is upto you: You can call 911on your mobile phone so an officer comes and then take his car;shoot at pedestrains until the police arrive; or stealthly steal a cop car form a police station.
More so than in the past, gunplay is and important part of GTA IV, whether it's on foot or while driving, and players will alos master hand-to-hand combat based on the Israeli krav maga combat style.

Multiplayer and more:
Arguably the biggest new feature in GTA IV isonline play for upto 16 gamers.
Both cooperative and competitive modes will be available including:
Death match, and Team death match:("frag or kill as many players as you can before time runs out.
GTA Race:, race your vehicle to the finish line while firing weapons at rivals.
Cop's N' Crooks: ateam based mode that pits police against thugs trying to protect thier boss.
Hangmans Noose: a four player coop mode.

Among other features: Downloadable missions after the game launches(Xbox-360 only).
Characters that remember if you helped them or not(which may affect whether they'll help you in the future)
Mini games such as bowling, pool, and arcades.
Access to e-mail and the web for info and missions
A optional in car GPS navigation so you dont need to look at your map as much.

Controversy:
Not unlike previuos GTA games you wil ruffle the feathers of concerned parents, politicians and activists.

You can still kill police, but it's wiser to avoid these shoot outs.
Though they'll try and jump out of the way you can still run over pedestrians.
Players can again proposition prostitues for healthboost.
Exotic pole dancers are in the game-but thiers is no nudity.nor is thier a shidden sex game.
You can also drink and drive in this game, and if you choose to go out partying with friends,at the end of the night you can walk home, hail a cab or drive.
If you drive, your vision is blurred, making it harder to control the vehicle.
Finally, GTA IV contains plenty of foul language and is  nnot approptiate for players under 17.

IGN gave it a 10/10.  They haven't given a game 10/10 in a decade.   I'm really not that interested in the series but that's got me itching to give it a look.
