Chelsea traveled to Real Madrid for the first match of the Final, and it would be one for the ages. The underdog Chelsea would not be intimidated by the home squad, especially after a 1-1 draw during the regular season. The Blues would establish their position from the get go, and Sean Wright Phillips would blast one past the keeper in the 7th minute. It did not look good for Real Madrid early on. Real Madrid was under pressure. And it didn't take long for them to get back into the match. After some great dribbling by Raul near the endline, he would find Sneijder from five meters out and the ball just snuck inside the near post to equalize, 1-1, in the 14th minute. The remainder of the first half would see both squads with decent chances, but nothing to show for them. The half would end at 1-1. The second half was more nail-biting, exciting action that would see chances on both sides, a total of 12 shots for Chelsea with seven on goal, and nine for Real Madrid with nine on goal. Both goal scorers would eventually be subbed out, with Sneijder going out in the 90th and Wright-Phillips exiting in the 105th. Regulation and extra time would end with the score 1-1. The penalty kick shootout would ensue. The shootout was as intense as the match itself, and Casillas held strong for Real Madrid, stopping the third shot from Chelsea. Guti, Raul, Van Nistelrooy, Robben, and Robinho would net for Real Madrid, while Anelka, Cole, and Lampard did the work for Chelsea. The home squad would escape with a win in the Final Tournament, 5-3 in the shootout. Great game house. It was as intense and exciting a match as I've played in a while. [8D]
