Looks like is a MAJOR problem.  My 60 gig looks to be the worst offender, too [;)]

OK so for TGV we have 1 who is completely screwed.  Andrea and I have had 1 freeze in probably 12 hours of play. I'm chalking that up to the random freezes you get in damn near every game.  B, on the other hand, that's definitely not random. [;)]

I'm in utter disbelief right now after looking around the internet... too many emotions to describe [;)]

C'mon man, IGN gave it a 10/10. [:(]

Just out of curiousity, I wonder if swapping HD's would work.

jumpputt -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/29/2008 5:41:35 PM)

I've had mine freeze two times when I paused the game.

MOMOwheeler -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/29/2008 6:24:45 PM)

At this point it sounds like a bad batch of discs (not official).... and XBOX is having similar issues.

FM6CT -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/29/2008 7:18:30 PM)

Have you got file sharing and or that news thingy turned on ???

MarkoC -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/29/2008 8:48:03 PM)

I had two freeze ups earlier this evening. [:@]

GTA Freeze Baffles Rockstar
Rockstar Support: No GTA Freeze Fix in Sight

[image]http://kotaku.com/assets/resources/2008/04/gtafreeze-thumb.jpg[/image] Earlier today we broke the news that some Grand Theft Auto IV gamers were having problems with the game on both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
For them, the game was freezing up during the introductory cut-scene, something that neither I nor Mike experienced during our time with the game on both systems. To be clear, we have no idea how widespread the problem is, but it's certainly on Rockstar's radar and making the rounds both in our tips line and on forums.
Rockstar declined to comment on the issue officially, so I went to the phone and called up Rockstar Support to see what they had to say about the problem.
A very friendly, and obviously unhappy, fellow answered the phone who, after thanking me for not yelling at him and apologizing profusely for the problem, spilled quite a bit of beans on the issue:

The man told me that the problem is apparently only effecting the 60 GB version of the Playstation 3, but that it didn't matter than my particular console was a launch console (Yes, I told a little white lie and said my copy was locking up.) He said the problem is not across the board for the 60GB PS3s but rather only impacts some, so their tech folks are working around the clock to try and figure out what is causing the issue.
He did ask me to make sure that my harddrive wasn't full and that I had the latest firmware update, but confessed that that really isn't what's causing most of the problem. He also said that the Xbox 360 is having the "exact same problem," which has further stumped their tech folks.
I asked him if wiping the harddrive and reinstalling the PS3 version would help, as seen on the PS forums, he said I could try but that he hadn't heard of it helping a single person.
He ended the call by saying that they really have no idea when a fix will be coming because they can't figure out what is exactly causing the problem and then once more apologized.
"I feel terrible about this."
If only more support folks were as empathetic and genuinely concerned about the problems their customers are going through.

FM6CT -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/30/2008 5:58:58 AM)

Found this idea to stop the freezing issue:

1) Delete ALL GTA IV game data, including the pre-install and any game saves (if you've got that far)

2) Update your console to the latest version of the firmware (if you haven't already done so).

3) Shut your console down (till you get the red shutdown light), Power off using the rocker switch at the back, then power back  up, start your console up and re-install GTA IV as before.

4) You should now find the game starts once the cut scene has finished / is skipped.

If this doesn't work, then your only option is to contact Rockstar directly using the customer service number in the back of the manual. So far following the above steps seems to universally cure this freezing problem but in the event of a suspect disk or a PS3 fault, your best bet is to contact either Rockstar or Sony respectively.

Worth a try I guess.

Maliquis -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/30/2008 6:04:40 AM)

I am also having the issue MOMO.  [:-]  Mine is an 80GB Motorstorm bundle, bought in January.  It's not as frequent as yours, but it definitely started right at the beginning cutscene.  As I understand, it's more a hardware issue than a software, so I don't know if exchanging my game would help.  I'll see what gets revealed this week on the issue.

MOMOwheeler -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/30/2008 6:25:38 AM)

I have tried everything short of reformatting my harddrive... and I stopped short of doing that because people at the PS forums says it doesnt help.  I have done everything... unplug the internet, delete all saves, disable internet, etc, etc, etc....

Maliquis -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/30/2008 8:50:34 AM)

MOMO, check this:
quote:

I have read on multiple Playstation messages all over the internet that it the freezing issue could be related to faulty discs....... On the back of you GTA IV Blu-Ray disc around the ring there is a bar code and a set of numbers, between those there will be a three digit code, I have heard of AO2, AO3, AO4. On many boards who had users post which discs they had and if they had or had not had freezing issues. It seemed to me that a vast majority of the hardcore freezing issues, mainly right after after install or first cut scene had the AO3 code on the reverse side of the CD. People will with AO2, AO4 reported hardly any issues. I have one with AO2 on it and have not had a problem. I wonder if anyone else has noticed or thought of this, because I am convinced it has to be a bad batch of discs or else EVERYONE would be having the problem.. Just a thought....

I'm going to look when I get home.  Maybe there is hope?

That is definitely something to look into.

It has been semi-confirmed that this is not the issue.  One post I read was from a guy who has 2 PS3's... the game works in one but not the other.

Maliquis -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/30/2008 9:41:04 AM)

Hmm...well another option I saw was to delete everything (GTA save data), hard power down the PS3, reboot, and install the game "offline".  That is, without signing in to PSN.  Is that one of the things you tried?

Tried it... failed miserably.
