MOMO, check this:
quote:

I have read on multiple Playstation messages all over the internet that it the freezing issue could be related to faulty discs....... On the back of you GTA IV Blu-Ray disc around the ring there is a bar code and a set of numbers, between those there will be a three digit code, I have heard of AO2, AO3, AO4. On many boards who had users post which discs they had and if they had or had not had freezing issues. It seemed to me that a vast majority of the hardcore freezing issues, mainly right after after install or first cut scene had the AO3 code on the reverse side of the CD. People will with AO2, AO4 reported hardly any issues. I have one with AO2 on it and have not had a problem. I wonder if anyone else has noticed or thought of this, because I am convinced it has to be a bad batch of discs or else EVERYONE would be having the problem.. Just a thought....

I'm going to look when I get home.  Maybe there is hope?

That is definitely something to look into.

It has been semi-confirmed that this is not the issue.  One post I read was from a guy who has 2 PS3's... the game works in one but not the other.

Hmmm, that would lead me to believe it might be a hard drive issue with the data that it written to the HDD from the disc.

On the other hand, the only game I have ever had a freezing issue with on the PS3 is Final Fantasy XII, which is a PS2 game and doesn't access data from the drive other than to save/load.  Dunno about this one.

BTW... Gamestop has some serious buttkissing to do for me.  I went there at lunch today and was bascially looked upon as a complete idiot by the manager.  He told me that under no circumstances would I be given a refund for the game and that it was only worth trade-in value.

I elected to keep my cool (suprisingly) and walk away knowing that this "policy" will likely be reviewed within the next week.

I have never been so close to reaching across a counter and strangling a dude more than today... I think I hurt my harm from patting myself on the back after I left... that dude doesnt even know how close he came to loosing an eye. [:@]

MarkoC -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/30/2008 10:12:58 AM)

The two times the game has frozen up on me were both during gameplay, not during the opening scene. [:D]

This is what I hate about the video game industry.  No returns, ever, under any circumstances.

Mental note: Do not beat Momo at Hot Shots this week.  It's all he has.  [&o]

Seriously bro... from all the accounts I have read in the past 12 hours... it's a complete crap shoot.

Some lauch 60's work fine... some dont.  Some people bought their PS3 last week in anticipation for this game; their's are broken also.

... at this point, it is 100% random.... [;)]

TDAWG23232 -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/30/2008 10:50:17 AM)

Well I would assume regardless of what the problem is at some point it will have to be addressed...but you knows what happens when you ASS-U-ME [:(][:(]

There has to be some common element thats causing it though .... something prob obscure or very minor that causes it to happen .... Ive read various theories on stuff like the cache filling up etc .... [:D] [:D] [:D]

The GameFAQs board is kind of brainstorming on the issue as well.  Nothing concrete yet.

GTA IV Overloading Console’s Cache - Causing Freezes

It was bound to happen. We’re now getting reports from several readers, as well as from around the net, that GTA IV is locking up, freezing, or crashing some gamer’s consoles. This happens with major releases (and anything from Rockstar).

Certain gamers have recently been experiencing freezing issues during introductory scenes in both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions of Rockstar’s latest title, Grand Theft Auto IV. While we haven’t experienced these problems ourselves, it seems there are a number of users out there who have complained about them.
Kotaku has the word from Rockstar Support. It was noted that this problem has mostly been occurring with the 60 GB version of the PS3. However, the techies at Rockstar were confused when they discovered people are having the "exact same problem" on the Xbox 360 version.

As it stands, there’s no fix. But we did some research and believe we have the answer as to why this is happening.
Rockstar, in their very finite wisdom designed the game to have no loading times. That’s great, except for the fact that GTA IV now overloads the cache and causes a lock-up (freeze). So now, instead of saving load times and providing a seamless experience, Rockstar has forced some machines to crash while attempting to load from the cache.

The solution: Rockstar needs to release a patch that limits the strain on the RAM right out of the gate. Can they even do this? Who knows? They haven’t managed to make a game that doesn’t freeze in two years. Unless you count the mega epic “Table Tennis”.

Roughdawg4 -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (4/30/2008 6:48:47 PM)

I tried playing twice and it crashed both times within 15 minutes.  I have waiting so long for this game and now I don't even want to play it.

Roughdawg4 -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (5/1/2008 5:56:23 AM)

Aren't they supposed to test for these kind of bugs? This seems like a real big one to miss.

MOMOwheeler -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (5/1/2008 6:34:41 AM)

This sounds very, very bad [&:] [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

For anyone that is getting this issue ..... what is your resolution set to ???
If its not set to 720P rockstar suggests you try that.

I think I may have had mine set to 1080p when it froze up on my. I guess I will leave 720p checked to see if that helps. [8D]

Nice tip.[8D]  I don't have that option, so all my games are run in 480p and I haven't had a freeze up yet.

Roughdawg4 -> RE: GTA Freezing issues (5/1/2008 10:17:48 AM)

I will make sure to try that out and see if that works.  Some people are saying to try playing the game offline.  I don't see how that would work but some people are saying it does.
